The Challenge

Digitizing India's arbitration workflow from paper to platform

CNICA (Chennai National and International Commercial Arbitration) needed to transform their entirely paper-based arbitration process into a digital platform. Every step - from case filing to arbitrator assignment to hearing scheduling to award generation - was manual.

The system needed to handle sensitive legal documents, maintain audit trails, support multiple user roles with granular permissions, and comply with Indian arbitration law requirements.

1

Paper-to-Digital

The entire arbitration workflow was paper-based. Every form, filing, and communication needed to be digitized.

2

Legal Compliance

The platform needed to comply with Indian arbitration law, including document retention and audit trail requirements.

3

Multi-Role Access

Arbitrators, parties, counsels, and administrators all needed different views and permissions within the same system.

4

Document Security

Sensitive legal documents required encryption, access controls, and tamper-proof audit logs.

What We Did

Modular ERP architecture with 11 integrated workflow modules

We designed a modular ERP system where each arbitration workflow stage became an independent module - all connected through a central case management engine that maintained state and audit trails across the entire lifecycle.

Phase 1

Core Platform & Case Management

Built the central case management engine, user authentication with role-based access, document management system with encryption, and the case filing module.

Phase 2

Workflow Modules

Implemented hearing scheduling, arbitrator assignment algorithms, communication threads, fee calculation, and award generation modules. Each module integrated with the central case engine.

Phase 3

Admin Tools & Deployment

Built comprehensive admin dashboards, reporting and analytics, bulk operations tools, and deployed with redundancy for zero-downtime operation.

The Results

A fully digitized arbitration workflow serving a Ministry-listed institution

The SmartCNICA platform launched with all 11 modules operational, handling the complete arbitration lifecycle digitally. The system has maintained zero downtime since launch.

Case processing time reduced dramatically, with automated notifications and digital document management eliminating the delays inherent in paper-based workflows.

100,000+ lines of code, 11 modules, zero downtime. Enterprise software built to legal-grade standards.

Key Takeaways

What this project proves

1

Modular architecture is essential for complex workflow systems. Each module can be updated independently without affecting others.

2

Legal software requires audit trails at every level. Building this in from the start is far easier than retrofitting.

3

Role-based access must be granular. In legal workflows, the wrong person seeing the wrong document has real consequences.

4

Zero-downtime deployment is achievable with proper architecture. Legal institutions cannot afford system outages.
